Holy Family Painting
Oil painting on wood of the Holy Family, which consists of the Child Jesus, Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. Veneration of the Holy Family formally began in the 17th century by Saint Francois de Laval who was the first bishop of New France who founded the confraternity of the Holy Family. This wood framed painting has incised Carabao bone overlay with palmette motif. I acquired this miniature portrayal in Manila, Philippines in 2008. It dates from the early 20th century and measures 5" x 7".
