YORUBA BEADED DANCE BELT
The Yoruba tribe of Nigeria is well known for its intricate beadwork and this piece is no exception. Beads are a sign of wealth. The entire form is that of a crocodile with two rabbits facing each other mid-body of the crocodile. Here the addition of the cowrie shells stitched to the beadwork enlivens the piece., and at the feet taking the place of the crocodile's claws. In Yoruba mythology, the rabbit is a trickster god.
