Description The katar or katara, is a type of push dagger and is the most famous and characteristic of Indian daggers. The weapon is characterized by its H-shaped horizontal hand grip which results in the blade sitting above the user's knuckles. Katar are unique to South Asia and I acquired this recently excavated iron example in Kerala, southern India. Ornamented ceremonial katar were also used in worship and some Indian nobility often wore ornamental katar as a symbol of their social status. Dating from the 1700's to 1800's, this cast iron dagger measures 19 1/4 inches long by three inches wide at its widest point on the handle.
