VIETNAMESE TRAN HOA WARRIOR
An ax yeilding one-eyed sea captain / warrior figure of Tranh Hoa. Perhaps a mythological character originating from Coadaism, ( a monotheistic suncretic religion established in the city of Tay Ninh.) The symbol of the faith is the one eye, representing the yang and a basic principle of Caodaism; i.e. "All Religions are one." This polychrome painted gold gilted lacquer figure was acquire in Hanoi, Vietnam, dates from the early 20th century, and measures 16 inches tall x 8 inches wide. Apparent chipping and restoration on arm.
