An Ekwe is an Igbo tribe traditional musical instrument. The ekwe is a type of slit drum with rectangular cavity and a slit in the hollowed out wooden interior. The ekwe is made out of wood and most commonly a tree trunk. The ekwe comes in a variety of sizes and designs and each size is determined by the purpose it is being used for.
This unusual slit drum features a stylized open mouthed hippopotamus with a squating human figure in its mouth, human mask-like design on snout and various geometric designs about legs and body.
