Description

Red Wing Stoneware and Pottery has a long history in Minnesota. Initially farming land, the farmer discovered an unique and very useable form of clay in the ground. From that stoneware vessels were made to be used to keep foods cold in the days before refrigeration. As well, ceramic pipes were made by Red Wing to meet the needs of a growing water system. Red Wing has undergone various iterations as a company but survives to this day creating the ovenware and stoneware that made them a household name. The term "spongeware" comes from the glazing technique where an actual spongue is used to dab the glaze on before the final firing.
