Description

Wood carved Yak with coral and shale stone adornments. The Yak is a large domesticated wild ox that lives in the high altitude of the Himalayas. The Yak is considered a very useful beast of burden. In Tibet it is used as a pack animal and for its milk, meat, and hide. In Bhutan it is revered as a religious animal. Every part of the Yak is made useful. The bones are used to carve statuary and the wool to weave clothes and other textiles. It's never killed but after its natural death, all this comes into use. The Yak in Bhutan depicts wealth and in older times, noble families owned a Yak as a measure of prosperity.

This carefully carved Cypress wood Yak was created as a decoration piece. It's fully hand crafted nature depicts every detail of a live yak. This one is also decorated with coral and cowrie conch shells to make it look attractive and dear. This yak is said to be three generations old (about 75 years) and was acquired from a family in Bumthang, a highland district in central Bhutan. It measures 9" long, 8" tall and 5.5" wide.
