A polychrome painted teak 'vahana', (vehicle or carraige of Hindu Gods), in horse form. Temples in India use depictions of these mythological 'vehicles' in many forms during temple processions. Such figuratives as the Garuda, Hanaman, horses, elephants, various birds and lions to name a few. These usually adorned mythological characters have significant religious importance. This adorned prancing horse vahana was acquired in Tanjore, South India and dates from the early 20th century. Measures 43" tall x 33" long x 10" wide .
